Congrats to Dwight Silverman of the Houston Chronicle who won first place in the best blog category Class AAAA. He was one of many Houston Chronicle staffers to take home a prize.

In a recent issue of Time Magazine’s Short List feature, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich lists off some of his favorite things at the moment.  He likes The Rachel Maddow Show, U2’s new album among other things.

But number 5 caught my attention because Ulrich listed Houston’s Rothko Chapel and The Menil Collection:

In an unassuming Houston neighborhood lie two of the most tranquil yet invigorating spaces on any art lover’s journey.

In the dignified stillness of the Rothko Chapel, one is enveloped in the black mysteries of Mark Rothko’s paintings; just down the street, Cy Twombly’s paintings immediately take you through thousands of years of civilization, captured on the canvas with exuberance, color and grace.

My wife and I went to both a couple of weeks ago and no sign of the drummer.

I’m sure you have heard about the blog and accompanying book called Stuff White People Like: A Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions by  Christian Lander at this point.

This is an interesting tale of the massive rise (and fall kinda based on his description) of a blogger in a matter of a few months.

The Dallas Cowboys say goodbye to Cumulus’ Sports KTCK-AM and Classic Rock KDBN-FM in the Metroplex and hello to KRLD:

CBS Radio’s Sports KRLD-FM/Dallas inks a multi-year deal for the broadcast rights to the Dallas Cowboys. Coverage will include play-by-play of each of the NFL team’s games, as well as a twice weekly segment with Cowboys Owner/GM and President Jerry Jones featuring regular appearances from head coach Wade Phillips. All good things must come to an end. So enjoy my last batch of Houston Texans Cheerleader tryout photos.

Terri Thomas, the operations manager of 97.9 The Box KBXX-Houston appears to be taking on double duty according to FMQB and others. Thomas will be programming Radio One co-owned Urban AC WQNC-FM/Charlotte, NC.

We’ve seen that happen in other parts of Texas. Brian Purdy of CBS is in charge of both Houston and Dallas clusters. Are tough times forcing radio to consolidate management positions even more?

Telemundo Goes Hi-Def

Telemundo’s KTMD Channel 47 in Houston is going high definition in April:

Telemundo said it would be the first Spanish-language net to offer HD content both at the local and network level.

Nine of Telemundo’s owned-and-operated TV stations will initially distribute the network HD signal to their audiences, including stations in Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston and Puerto Rico. The remaining O&Os will phase in HD signals over the next 12 months. READ THE REST

KLOL and KHMX are with CBS

It’s official :

Houston: CBS will get KHMX-FM & KLOL-FM, joining a cluster which already includes KIKK-AM, KKHH-FM & KILT AM-FM. Clear Channel retains KTBZ-FM, KBME-AM, KKRW-FM, KODA-FM, KPRC-AM & KTRH-AM. READ MORE

What does this mean to you right now? Not much if you believe the company. CBS says it is keeping the Mega 101 and Mix 96.5 formats. Will they keep their word? That’s anybody’s guess now.

I can tell you that CBS made sure to stop rebroadcasting NewsRadio 740 KTRH on Mega 101 KLOL HD-2 though. The HD2 station is gone. You never know what you are getting HD Radio wise with CBS in Houston. As I’ve written before, Hot 95.7 HD2 is supposed to be dance - that is if you can get it. Most of the time the HD2 station just isn’t there. I don’t have that problem with Clear Channel Houston’s HD2 stations.

Frenchy’s expands in Houston

I’m late on this Frenchy’s announcement but what are you going to do? Cancel your mikemcguff.com subscription?

Not deterred by the current economic downturn, the popular Creole chicken brand Frenchy’s is expanding; this time in Northwest Houston. Frenchy’s second fast-casual restaurant location will open its doors by Saturday, April 4, and is located at 4705 FM 1960 Rd. West, Houston, TX 77069. This location is the seventh Frenchy’s location owned and operated by GlennLock Foods, Ltd., the exclusive licensees of the Frenchy’s brand and a 3131 Properties, Ltd. subsidiary.
