Innovator of TV news graphics dies
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 20th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogWhat would television news be without graphics? We owe it all to this pioneer who has passed on:
Ben Blank, who as graphics director for CBS and later ABC television news introduced the concept of using logolike images behind anchors as signatures for major news coverage, died on Feb. 3 at his home in Teaneck, N.J. He was 87. READ MORE

Android G2 the HTC Magic - the next Google phone
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 19th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogI was hesitant to go after the original Google phone powered by Android. Well, guess what? The next version is coming out and Gizmodo has a review:
HTC has got a very smooth phone, which feels great on your hands and in your pants’ pockets. While it’s sightly thicker than the iPhone, the narrower, rounded body, and weight makes it feel the same size. For sure, a lot less bulky than the G1, which looks like a brick next to this. And as you have seen in the shots, the final HTC Magic is quite pretty. Have no doubt: This thing alone will make many consumers put up with the less-than-ideal software keyboard. READ MORE
Dallas could tell us the future of Mega 101 KLOL
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 19th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogA couple of months ago I posted how CBS took over 101 KLOL. The question was would the company keep the Mega format or go with something else. We probably have our answer.
Lots of radio folks think that CBS is keeping the Mega format on 101 KLOL. Why? The company just flipped its ‘Movin’ format in Dallas Fort Worth to the Mega format reports the Fort Worth Star Telegram:
Fans of pop/R&B station KMVK/107.5 FM “Movin’ 107.5″ may have been fiddling with their radio dials about 1 p.m. Tuesday, when the station abruptly cut off Madonna’s Vogue and, after a moment of silence, came back with Juanes’ Gotas de Agua Dolce, the very first song played on Spanish adult-contemporary “Mega 107.5 FM.” READ MORE

950 KPRC gets Chris Baker back, Walton and Johnson to 93.7 The Arrow KKRW
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 19th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogClear Channel Houston has a big announcement with this press release:
KPRC-AM Announces Chris Baker to Follow Joe ‘Pags’ Pagliarulo Starting March 2nd
Houston, Texas , February 17, 2009 –Beginning Monday, March 2nd, Houstonians will get an ever better cup of 9-5-0 Radio Mojo when Chris Baker returns to the airwaves on his hometown station KPRC-AM announced Eddie Martiny, President and Market Manager for Clear Channel Radio Houston. The Chris Baker show will air live from 3-5pm daily, while award winning Joe ‘Pags’ Pagliarulo will move to mornings to host “your Morning Cup of Joe” from 6-9am.
“Chris has a lot of fans in Houston, and he’s incredibly talented. We are excited to bring him back to Houston, back to the same station and time slot in which he began on-air over eight years ago,” said Michael Berry, Operations Director for Clear Channel Radio Houston’s AM stations. “With Walton & Johnson moving up the dial to the Arrow, 93.7 FM, the morning show slot opened on The 9-5-0. ‘Pags’ was the perfect choice for the mornings. If ‘Pags’ can appear on Fox News Channel, CNN, Headline News, CNBC and fill in for Glen Beck, we know he will be the perfect cup-of morning Joe for Houston.” added Berry.
Joe ‘Pags has been honored with multiple AP and broadcast association awards of excellence, and has been ranked among the most influential talk show hosts in America. Chris Baker is a stand-up comic who has been making Houstonians laugh for years, but he also makes them think. Houston loves his brand of talk and humor, and Clear Channel is looking forward to his listeners responding to his message.
The new KPRC-AM 9-5-0 Radio Mojo line up will be:
Morning Cup of Joe with Joe ‘Pags’ Pagliarulo 6-9am
Michael Garfield 9a-11a
Outlaw Dave 11a-1p
Dave Ramsey Show 1p-3p
The Chris Baker Show 3-5pm
The Michael Savage Show 5-8pm
KPRC-AM is the first radio station in Texas, originally broadcasting in 1925. KPRC-AM’s legendary TalkRadio format transitioned to “guytalk” in July of 2007. With the exciting move of ‘Pags’ to the mornings and the addition of Baker and the station will retain the popular Radio Mojo format.

Here is a tribute very close to my heart - fallen sodas. In face Will-E and I talk about Surge all the time.
Why did it die?
I used to drink it to get through a Tuesday 8am class in college after working late due to ABC’s Monday Night Football. I felt more extreme those mornings after the first drink. Then Baylor outlawed Coke products in favor of Dr. Pepper so the Surge machine vanished out of the Castellaw Communications Center vending area.
Other featured drinks in the tribute are Crystal Pepsi (yuck), Slice (who cares?), Josta (huh?), Pepsi’s Wild Bunch (another huh?), Pepsi Blue (eewww), Mr. Green (sounds like a toilet cleaner), Pepsi Fire and Pepsi Ice (way too big of themes for drinks), Coke II (good riddance) among others.
