Ken Hoffman’s radio spat with co-hosts on 1560 The Game?
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 27th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blog
I started getting emails today about Ken Hoffman’s radio show on 1560 The Game KGOW in Houston. Hoffman was saying his co-workers, David Nuno and Raheel Ramzanali (who he says he helped start their radio careers) left and started a show down the radio dial!
Lots of questions, but mikemcguff.com reader Jason thinks this could be a stunt of some sort. Maybe he is right, after all Hoffman does like the WWE!
Former KPRC 2 meteorologist Chuck George profiled
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 27th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogFormer KPRC Channel 2 meteorologist Chuck George had his face plastered on the side of a live truck in Houston, and now the Tuscon Weekly is profiling him:
KOLD Channel 13 weather head Chuck George, is not your stereotypical science geek, yet his knowledge, combined with his relentless willingness to take his show to the street, has helped him become one of the most recognizable television-media personalities in the market. READ MORE
This is not the first time we have heard from George. There was a Chuck George action figure fashioned after him.
Of course we can’t forget about George’s replacement Wes Hohenstein. He pretty much has his own section on this blog. Wes’ replacement Byron Miranda isn’t doing too shabby around here either.
No I don’t have a love affair with former KPRC morning meteorologists. At least I don’t think I do. Hey, you don’t see an Orelon Sidney section here…yet.

John McCaa of WFAA 8 Dallas profiled
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 27th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogProfile of WFAA Channel 8 Dallas anchor John McCaa in D Magazine:
The John McCaa you don’t know is a self-described “art freak” and onetime R-rated standup comic who was raised in Spain, vacations annually in Italy, and likes nothing more than losing himself in the beat of his in-home drum set. What’s more, he’s a man who “can listen to an opera and break out in tears.” But seriously, folks, he’s also a playful mimic known to imitate his bosses at work.
“I like to have a lot more fun than people think,” McCaa insists. “And maybe that’ll come out someday on the air. Maybe.” READ MORE

Walden tells it his way, one memory triggering another, not so much talking about his huge success as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand television theme creators (thirtysomething, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, The West Wing, Friday Night Lights) as just relishing the small details of his distant Houston past, savoring memories of how he got from Lamar High School to Emmy awards and industry acclaim. That is an impressive list of TV shows that have his name attached. He also went to Lamar like me!

Astroworld reborn as giant rodeo parking lot
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 26th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogI guess I can believe that the old Astroworld land will become a giant Houston rodeo parking lot. What else is it good for? Although we kept hearing how valuable it was before the last ride came down. Oh well.
It’s a good excuse to pull out that page I built in October that showcases old video and pictures of Astroworld from the KTRK Channel 13 archives.
See the Houston rodeo news section I just built.
10 Predictions for Radio’s Next 5 Years
Closed Published by mikemcguff February 26th, 2009 on mikemcguff.com blogMark Ramsey of the MusicThinkTank blog takes a stab at the future of radio. Here are two that really stuck out to me:
3. The formats which rise (to the degree that formats rise) will be the ones catering specifically to audiences who are less tech savvy or the old dogs who don’t wish to be taught new tricks. Look for Spanish language radio to be the big winner here along with anything targeting aging Boomers.
9. Much of the non-music content on TV will be simulcast on radio, thus extending the distribution for TV content at a comparatively low cost and reframing many stations as distribution channels for TV - without pictures. CNN, FOX, MSNBC, E!….It will all be on a radio station near you. READ THE REST

Jason Bargas of Houstonist really likes Crave Cupcakes in Houston’s Uptown Park:
CRAVE Cupcakes (no, we’re not screaming, that’s how they write it) should feel secure in their future despite the economic woes facing Houston.
Quite simply, CRAVE bakes the best cupcakes we’ve ever tasted - hands down. Better than Mom’s. Better than Grandma’s. READ MORE
