Follow-up from Land Use Forum

The Land Use Forum that we cosponsored Tuesday, February 26 was a great success with over 500 people in attendance and many people from all sides of the planning debate said it was a good constructive discussion of Houston’s future.

Another important Houston media figure has decided to take the plunge and talk to the number one, self-proclaimed Houston media blog written by a blond native Houstonian.

That means he is talking to me on the mikemcguff.com blog if you didn’t get all of that. And if you are a blond, native Houstonian who blogs about media, I’m sure your blog is good too.

CHECK IT OUT ON MONDAY.

This person is joining some big-time company. Read other media folk’s interviews who have decided to stop by here:

- Ed Brandon announces retirement on the mikemcguff blog
- Michael Berry talks to Mike McGuff about his new radio role, leaving politics
- Ken Hoffman of the Houston Chronicle talks to Mike McGuff
- Houston radio’s Laurie Kendrick talks to Mike McGuff
- David Sadof talks to the Mike McGuff Blog

Who should I interview next?

A friend of mine, Ryan Despain of Houston, just got back from cave diving in Cozumel.

Do yourself a favor and check out his amazing photos.

He even found human bones in there! He figures those are very old.

This is the first time I have shared his pictures with you.

Remember Z-Rock? It was on at 1070 AM and 106.9 FM in Houston at points during the 80s and 90s. I never could pick it up clearly, but I still listened.

Z-Rock was a national rock/heavy metal network that played on local stations across the country. The DJs were good and the music heavy. I remember it sounding more produced than most local radio.

Well, some enterprising person has put air checks up from the network. Even better, they have an emulator that plays clips from actual shows and mixes them with Z-Rock music. It’s as good as we’re gonna get folks.

GO LISTEN

I brought this up in the past that Rock 101 KLOL employees should be doing this. There are people in Houston and beyond that would listen to that dead heritage Houston station.

Kevin Price, who hosts the Houston Business Show (Monday through Friday at 11 AM on CNN 650 AM), let me in on a little office gossip over at KIKK-AM.

He says former Congressman Steve Stockman is getting in own show on CNN 650 AM, Monday through Friday from 4 to 6pm starting in the next couple of weeks.

Todd Spivak of the Houston Press used to work in Chicago and covered Barack Obama way before he was a Senator. In fact at that point, Spivak says no one really knew who Obama was:

My view of Obama then wasn’t all that different from the image he projects now. He was smart, confident, charismatic and liberal. One thing I can say is, I never heard him launch into the preacher-man voice he now employs during speeches. He sounded vanilla, and activists in his mostly black district often chided him for it.

I was 25 and had no problem interviewing big-wig politicians. But I always had to steel my nerves when calling Obama. His intelligence was intimidating, and my hands inevitably shook with sweat.

It was serendipity that I ever came to know Obama at all. Looking back, I think of it as a Forrest Gump moment: History was unfolding and I was at the center of it, clueless. It’s a huge bummer to me that I never taped our interviews.

Spivak also got yelled at by Obama for a story!
